morning calm.

Upon successfully signing our lease, I knew that I wanted to treat us to something small in celebration. A house-warming present of sorts. I had remembered stumbling upon Morning Calm, an etsy shop with the prettiest looking soaps from Korea. I quickly headed on over and made my purchase: a pack of nine soap samples ranging from bamboo charcoal to french green clay and peppermint. The package arrived promptly, wrapped in kraft paper and twine, with the loveliest little notes in the prettiest penmanship. As miniscule as a small bar of high quality, delicious smelling hand soap is, it’s often the littlest things, the small indulgences, that make life just that much better.

Currently, Hwasson from Morning Calm is donating 50% of many of her products to aid in the relief of Japan. I highly suggest moseying on over to pick yourself up some pretty little things.

falling for fall.

I know that many of you are sad to see the summer months fade away. While I agree that the slow, leisure pace of summer is fantastic, there are many reasons to embrace the crisp months of fall in all its glory. I’ve compiled a list of things that we’re able to resurrect now that fall is on its way. Between warm hearty meals, cool, casual clothes, no more frizzy hair and cozy evenings in, there’s so much to be excited about!

There. Don’t we all feel a little better now?

delicious treats.

With this incredible heat wave that seems to have swept over the city, all I can think about is ways to cool down (beside coming in to work naked, which, I’m thinking, does not conform to our dress code). I stumbled upon these delicious looking treats that I really feel could help us all beat the heat at least a little bit. And if you use natural juices, homemade raspberry purées, and yogurt, you don’t need to feel guilty when you reach for a second… or third (don’t judge me, it’s really hot!)

theurel & thomas.

Some incredible package design for you! Theurel & Thomas, a Mexico based french pastry shoppe, has really hit the nail on the head with these designs. The packaging allows the delicious treats to really stand out and speak for themselves, all the while remaining elegant and glamorous.

maccools.

You may have noticed a recent post with a picture of MacCools Re-use shoppe from my long weekend in Prince Edward County. It’s a second-hand store located in a 150 year old barn just down the street from my cottage, and it was recently featured in Toronto Life. I highly recommend you go and check it out if you’re ever in the area. It’s a really cool space, with all sorts of amazing finds. (If you’re looking for vintage teak furniture, this is your best bet. The stuff is ridiculously priced and in amazing condition). I scored this incredible sea foam green antique fan for a measly $20.00. It still works too! It makes a ton of noise, and would probably take your finger off without thinking twice about it, but I love how it looks on my dresser.

dear kristyn.

My boyfriend’s sister is quite upset that I did not let her know that I have a blog. SOMEONE spilled the beans before I was able to, and now I’m in trouble. I’m offering her this, Le Devin, from Ladurée in Paris (since it’s just a picture, I will also be offering a freshly baked cookie, which I will personally deliver to her tomorrow night), as an apology.

I think I win now.

girls night out.

You may have seen Colio’s Girls Night Out’s selection of wines kicking around your LCBO in the past. They are local (Ontario Wines), affordable (under 13$ a bottle) and delicious. Plus, the label is adorable, and everyone knows that always makes everything better (so what if I’m a marketers dream. I like my things pretty).

BUT, did you know that this was happening?

sent to me by Colio Estate Wines

Yep! Girls Night Out Strawberry-Watermelon and Grapefruit-Pineapple-Lemonade flavoured wine. I had the opportunity to test them the other week and they are incredibly tasty. They are this-is-dangerous kinda good. The Strawberry Samba one is definitely my favourite, but I tend to have a bit of a sweet tooth.

They go on the shelves this weekend, so keep your eye out! I’m excited.

cupcakes & packages.

See? Now this is cupcake packaging done right. Does anyone know a good cupcake place in Toronto that has pretty packaging? Perhaps I will make it my mission to visit each and every one of them to find one. Oh, I like this mission.

scenes from my weekend.

I must say, this was quite the successful weekend.

Friday night a group of us gathered to celebrate the success of our good friends new restaurant, Le Papillon on the Park. Honestly, I’m not just saying this because I’m totally biased, it was incredible. Beyond what I expected. Seriously. Go. Talk to Steph (the tall, dark, handsome one with hair you will probably be jealous of) and get the french onion soup. I left the restaurant with my heart all swollen – I’m so proud of Steph - I’ve been blessed with such incredible friends!

Saturday I humoured my boyfriend by watching the big UFC fight with him and a few friends. Never will I ever understand why someone would voluntarily request to be punched in the face on national television; but it was definitely more entertaining than I was anticipating.

And yesterday? My mom, brother and I celebrated mothers day over shiitake & asparagus risotto, followed by cupcakes from The Designer Cookie, and we finally got to see the Babies documentary! Great success.

If you’ve never made risotto before, click on the link to the recipe above and try it out. I’ve heard that risotto can be pretty finicky. This is the only one I’ve ever attempted, but it’s delicious and it’s never failed me!

As for the cupcakes, they really were terrific, but I probably wouldn’t go back there. I’m a sucker for detail and the package they came in was something you would find at a local grocery store.   I feel that if you’re calling yourself The Designer anything, everything should be top-notch. I want my $3.50 cupcake to come in a pretty, environmentally friendly package with a cute little ribbon. But I’m kind of a nerd like that.

Note: I even had to put them on a plate for my cupcake photoshoot – that’s how bad the packaging was!

And because it isn’t mothers day without your daughter posting pictures of you with big hair for the world to see; here is a picture of my mother when she was around my age. Look how foxy she is!

<3 you mom.

weekend things.

In order to beat the cold & rain we’re expecting, I hope your weekend is filled with lots and lots of the following. Feel free to substitute the hot chocolate with a glass of champagne, naturally.

ps. Happy mothers day to my beautiful Mama, and my wonderful step-mom, Linda!

semi-free things!

I’m not the biggest Starbucks advocate out there. I find that their tea is too strong (and NOT loose leaf. Tea snob. Remember?), and the rest of their drinks either give me a headache or hurt my stomach. Maybe I’m just sensitive. Anyway, that being said, I’m a sucker for a deal. From today until the 16th between 3 and 5 pm all of their fancy new frappuccinos are half price! Now Go. Go. Go!!!

cinnamon & sugar.

It’s confession time again. I have another guilty pleasure: cinnamon + sugar on toast. I thought that I was alone in this endeavour, making it when no one is around; no prying eyes to judge me. But it turns out, people really do this! Lots of people! So many people that one lovely (and hilarious) lady took the time to write a very detailed analysis on the way in which to PROPERLY make cinnamon + sugar toast. I’m ashamed to say that I’ve been doing it wrong my entire life. I never realised the potential of this delicious treat. Go visit the Pioneer Woman to see how to properly execute this cinnamony goodness. I know what I’ll be doing tonight.
tip: she uses both vanilla AND nutmeg. My gosh I’m excited.

chocolate & strawberries.

Last night I made chocolate covered strawberries. They were dangerously easy. They weren’t just “oh? this is easy” kind of easy… No. They were “I wish I didn’t know how easy it is to make these” kind of easy.

The steps?
.Get random, unnecessary but undeniable urge slash craving for said chocolate covered strawberries
.Search through cupboards
.Gather all chocolate. If you have the option, opt for the dark chocolate. If you’re desperate? Any chocolate will do
.Bring a pot of water to a boil
.Place a heat proof bowl on top of your boiling water (to create a double boiler)
.Put found chocolate into the bowl
.Stir
.Melt
.Dip
.Refrigerate

You’re welcome.

tea snob.

I have recently become a self-proclaimed tea snob. Sorry Red Rose, but you just don’t cut it anymore. If you have not yet tried David’s Tea, you are missing out on a really important part of life! They have a huge selection of loose leaf teas and the quality is out of this world (yeah, I said out of this world). Every afternoon I brew myself a cup of Glitter & Gold. Guys, this stuff actually sparkles – I’m not even making this up. It’s incredibly exciting. Unfortunately they have discontinued this particular kind, but there are so many to choose from, and trust me, you will not be disappointed. I’m not even being paid to say any of this; it’s just that good.

glee.

Was anybody else sorely dissapointed with last nights episode of glee?
It made me feel a little bit like this:

source unknown due to my poor memory

For those of you who are wondering, and I know you are, I have named her Esme. For those of you who are not yet aware, I take great pride in my ability to name, well, everything. Spatulas, bicycles, eyelashes… I even have a pink polka-dotted duster named Lola. She is pretty useless but I love her all the same.

spring rolls & reality shows.

I have a confession to make. My name is Jacquelyn, and I watch the Hills. Tonight, the ladies are coming over to make these bad boys, and to enjoy Heidi in all of her boobed glory. I feel at the ripe age of 24, I am well past the age where I should be enjoying mind numbing shows such as this one, and I’m thinking maybe it’s just an excuse for all of us girls to get together one night a week. Right? Ok. I lied. It’s a good show. Don’t judge us.

birthdays & cupcakes.

We celebrated my best friend (and roommates) birthday this weekend. We all gathered at Stone’s Place and danced like fools. The highlight of the evening though? These cupcakes. Look how pretty!
