diy: dye.

The idea of dying my own fabrics to create something unique and one of a kind has always been something that intrigued me. When I stumbled upon this do-it-yourself recipe in the latest Sweet Paul Mag for doing just that, I had to add it to my list of things to do in my lifetime. And the fact that you use produce from your local grocery store to achieve this beautiful look makes this process all the more appealing.

aaand here’s how it’s done:

ps. if you have yet to peruse through that which is Sweet Paul‘s online mag, I highly recommend moseying over. It’s riddled with delicious recipes and lots of pretty things to feast your eyes on.

since moving to india i’ve developed, not surprisingly, a major interest in textiles and dying (so much beautiful fabric and colour here!)….so much so that i’ll be taking a natural dye and block printing workshop in Rajasthan later this summer – i’m so excited!

in the meantime, i’ve bought different weights of fabric to start experimenting on my rooftop terrace by myself – and these recipes will certainly come in handy. i think i’ll give it a try this weekend! thanks for sharing :)

(oh and to answer your question i’m here for 1 year…9 more months to go :)

Oh my goodness! This makes me want to run to the market and buy beetroots immediately! I wonder how you wash the dipped items and stop the colour from running? Any idea? I might try this over the weekend. Thanks for the inspiration!

That’s a good question. I’m not sure, I’ve never tried it! I would probably leave them for a few days before washing them to really let the dye settle in. I would probably wash them by hand with a mild detergent and hope for the best. I will attempt this so I’ll let you know how it goes!

  7. So beautiful. Ombre is really taking off in painted furniture too. The look just says summer, don’t you think?
